Μορφήν αναλλοιώτως ανθρωπίνην προσέλαβες
Έχουμε εισέλθει στο Νέο Έτος και αυτή την περίοδο ανταλλάσσουμε ευχές. Ευχόμαστε ο ένας στον άλλο ο Κύριος να μας χαρίσει υγεία, να μας ευλογήσει ο Θεός, να απαλλαγούμε από τα διάφορα προβλήματα και παρόμοια.
Όλες αυτές οι ευχές, χωρίς αμφιβολία, είναι καλές. Εκφράζουν την αγάπη και το ενδιαφέρον στους συνανθρώπους μας. Όμως το νόημα της εορτής της Πρωτοχρονιάς βρίσκεται στο τροπάριο που ψάλλεται την ημέρα αυτή. Ο Θεός παίρνει ανθρώπινη μορφή χωρίς να σταματήσει να είναι ταυτόχρονα και Θεός. Ο Θεός παίρνει ανθρώπινη μορφή ώστε ο άνθρωπος να γίνει κατά χάριν Θεός. Όλα όσα έχουν διατυπωθεί στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη μέσα από εικόνες και διδασκαλίες των Προφητών, είναι σκιές την πραγματικότητας που φανερώνεται με την σάρκωση του Χριστού. Κατά την Δημιουργία του κόσμου, για παράδειγμα, ο άνθρωπος πλάθεται κατ’ εικόνα και καθ’ ομοίωση. Πώς όμως θα ομοιωθεί με τον Θεό; Αυτό αποκαλύπτεται με την Γέννηση του Κυρίου. Ο Χριστός γεννάται όπως όλοι οι άνθρωποι, και ακολουθεί όσα προβλέπει ο Μωσαϊκός Νόμος για να αφαιρέσει από πάνω μας το βάρος των παθών, δηλαδή της αμαρτίας, το βάρος και του Νόμου και να μας δωρίσει την χάρη Του. Η νέα χρονιά σηματοδοτεί αυτή τη νέα κατάσταση. Ο Κύριος με την Γέννηση Του, την παρουσία Του στον κόσμο, την Σταύρωση και την Ανάσταση, μας φέρνει την αιώνια ζωή η οποία είναι η εν Χριστώ ζωή. Σε αυτήν ο άνθρωπος έχει δυνατότητα να συμμετάσχει ήδη από την γήινη ζωή του. Η ευχή λοιπόν που δίνουμε και παίρνουμε “χρόνια πολλά” ας μας θυμίζει τα πολλά, τα ατελεύτητα χρόνια που έχουμε την δυνατότητα να ζήσουμε κοντά στον Χριστό. Ο Εμμανουήλ είναι μαζί μας και εμείς μαζί Του και τώρα και στους απέραντους αιώνες.
Μορφήν αναλλοιώτως ανθρωπίνην προσέλαβες, Θεός ων κατ' ουσίαν, πολυεύσπλαγχνε Κύριε· και Νόμον εκπληρών, περιτομήν, θελήσει καταδέχη σαρκικήν, όπως παύσης τα σκιώδη, και περιέλης το κάλυμμα των παθών ημών. Δόξα τη αγαθότητι τη ση, δόξα τη ευσπλαγχνία σου, δόξα τη ανεκφράστω Λόγε συγκαταβάσει σου.

You assumed human nature without transmutation.
We have entered the New Year and we are currently exchanging wishes. We wish each other the Lord to give us health, to be blessed by God, to get rid of various problems and the like.
All these wishes, without a doubt, are good. They express love and interest in our fellow human beings. But the meaning of the New Year celebration is in the troparion that is sung on this day. God takes human nature without ceasing to be God at the same time. God takes human nature so that man becomes God by grace. Everything that has been formulated in the Old Testament through images and teachings of the Prophets, are shadows of the reality that is revealed with the incarnation of Christ. In the Creation of the world, for example, man is created in the image and likeness. But how will he become like God? This is revealed at the Nativity of the Lord. Christ is born like all men, and follows what the Mosaic Law provides in order to remove from us the load of the passions, that is, the load of sin, the load of the Law, and to give us His Grace. The new year marks this new situation. The Lord with His Birth, His presence in the world, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, brings us eternal life which is life in Christ. Man has the opportunity to participate in it already from his earthly life. So the wish we give and receive "happy New Year, Merry many years to come" reminds us of the eternal life we have the opportunity to live close to Christ. Emmanuel is with us and we are with Him now and in the endless centuries.
In essence being God, most-compassionate Master, You assumed human nature without transmutation. Fulfilling the Law, of Your own will You accepted circumcision in the flesh, to bring an end to the shadow, and to remove the passions that cover us. Glory to Your benevolence, O Lord; glory to Your compassion; glory to Your inexpressible condescension, O Word

The Holy Martyrs Theopemptus and Theonas
When the persecution of Diocletian broke out in 290, Saint Theopemptus, a bishop, was taken for his confession of Christ, and convicted Diocletian to his face for his error and ungodliness. Remaining unhurt after cruel tortures, he was given poison to drink, which had been prepared by a sorcerer named Theonas. Protected by divine grace from this also, he drew Theonas to Christ, and after other torments, was beheaded. Saint Theonas was cast into a pit and buried alive.

TIMOTHY, my son, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry.
For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

The Reading is from Mark 1:1-8
The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophets, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.' John was baptizing in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
