Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Tone

When the tidings of the Resurrection from the glorious angel was proclaimed unto the women disciples and our ancestral sentence also had been abolished to the Apostles with boasting did they proclaim that death is vanquished evermore and Christ our God is risen from the dead and granted to the world his great mercy.

Apolytikion for Theotokos' Nativity Forefeast in the 4th Tone

From the root of Jesse and the loins of David the King, Mariam, the child of God, is born for our sake this day. Hence, all creation exulteth on its renewal. Both Heaven and the earth rejoice together now. Praise her, O ye tribes of nations here below. The righteous Joachim rejoiceth, and Anna keepeth feast, crying out: The barren beareth the Theotokos, the nourisher of our life.

Apolytikion for the Church (Pentecost) in the Plagal 4th Tone

O blessed are You, O Christ our God, who by sending down the Holy Spirit upon them made the fishermen wise and through them illumined the world, and to You the universe was ever drawn. All glory to You, O Lord.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 3rd Tone

Today the virgin Theotokos, Mary, the fortified chamber of the heavenly groom, is born by the will of God of a barren woman, being prepared as a chariot for God the Word for to this she had been foredestined, since she is the divine gate and the Mother of Life in truth.

The Forefeast of the Nativity of the Theotokos

September 07

Sozon the Martyr

This holy Martyr was a shepherd in Lycaonia. Born a pagan, named Tarasius, he received holy Baptism and was renamed Sozon. Filled with zeal for the truth, he taught his countrymen to desist from the worship of idols. Once he entered the temple of Artemis in Pompeiopolis of Cilicia, cut off the golden hand of the idol, and breaking it in pieces, distributed it among the poor. When he saw that many were being unjustly punished for the theft, of his own accord he gave himself up to Maximian the Governor. He was beaten with rods until his bones were broken. According to some, he suffered martyrdom in 288; according to others, in 304.

September 08

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was born of barren and aged parents, Joachim and Anna, about the year 16 or 17 before the birth of Christ. Joachim was descended from the royal line of David, of the tribe of Judah. Anna was of the priestly tribe of Levi, a daughter of the priest Matthan and Mary, his wife.

September 10

Menodora, Metrodora, & Nymphodora the Martyrs

These Martyrs, sisters according to the flesh, were from Bithynia. They lived in virginity on a mountain near the Pythian hot springs of Bithynia, devoting themselves to asceticism and prayer. Betrayed to the local governor, Fronto, they were subjected to frightful tortures, and so gave up their holy souls into the hands of God. They contested for the Faith during the reign of Maximian, in the year 304.

September 11

Euphrosynos the Cook

Our Holy Father Euphrosynos (Euphrósynos)1 the Cook was born into a peasant family, and had no schooling, but he was truly devout and faithful. As an adult, he became a cook, and was able to save money out of his expenses by depriving himself, but only for the sake of almsgiving. His position as a cook permitted him to eat the best food first, but he never took advantage of this privilege. He ate his greens and olives gratefully, while the most appetizing meats and most tantalizing fish were cooking before him. Later Euphrosynos went to a monastery, where his obedience was to work in the kitchen as a cook. In contrast to the meals that he used to prepare in secular hotels, he made very plain food in the monastery. To those who complained and mocked him, Euphrosynos meekly replied: "Good cooking is not useful for attaining the Kingdom of Heaven. The more the body craves pleasure, the more the soul will lose that which it truly needs. It is not my intention to punish you." Some of the monks scorned him because of his coarse rustic background, but he endured their contempt in silence and was not disturbed by it. Saint Euphrosynos strove to please the Lord by his virtuous life, which he concealed from others, but the Lord Himself revealed to the monastic brethren just what spiritual heights their cook had attained. In the same monastery there was a devout priest who prayed that he might know what good things are prepared for those who love God. One night, as he was sleeping, he found himself in a beautiful garden, where, to his astonishment, he beheld the most wondrous things. Then he saw Father Euphrosynos, the monastery cook standing in the garden and partaking of the good things of that place. As he approached the cook, he asked to whom the garden belonged, and how he came to be there. Saint Euphrosynos replied, "This garden is reserved for God's elect, and by His great goodness, I also dwell here." Then the priest asked him what he did in the garden. The Saint told him, "I have authority over all the things you see here. I rejoice and am filled with gladness and the spiritual enjoyment of them." The priest questioned him again, "Can you give me something of these good things?" "Certainly," he replied, "by God's grace, take whatever you wish." Pointing to some apples, he inquired if he might have some of them. Taking a few of the apples, Saint Euphrosynos placed them in the priest's outer garment saying, "Receive that which you requested, and may you delight in them." At that moment the semantron was heard, summoning the Fathers to the Midnight Service. When the priest awakened, he thought that his vision was just a dream. But when he reached for his outer garment, he found the apples which the cook had given him, and he could still smell their wonderful fragrance. He got out of bed and then hurried to church. There he saw Euphrosynos and asked him where he had been that night. The Saint said, "Forgive me, Father, I have not been anywhere tonight. I have just come to church or the Service." The priest urged him to tell the truth, so that God's glory might be made manifest. The humble Euphrosynos told him, "I was in the place where the good things are, which those who love God shall inherit, and which for many years you wished to behold. There you saw me enjoying the blessings of that garden; for God had deigned to reveal to you the blessings of the Just. He has performed this miracle through me, the lowly one." "Father Euphrosynos, what did you give me from that garden?" He replied, "The delightful and most fragrant apples which you just put on your bed. Forgive me, Father, for I am a worm and not a man." When the service of Matins was over, the priest told the brethren about his vision and showed them the apples. They noticed the ineffable fragrance with spiritual joy, marveling at what the priest had told them. Rushing into the kitchen, they found that Saint Euphrosynos had already left the monastery, fleeing from the glory of men, and he could not be found. The brethren shared the apples among themselves and, as a blessing, gave pieces to those who visited the monastery, especially for those in need of healing, for those who ate the apples were cured of their ailments. Many received benefit from the gift of Saint Euphrosynos. An account of this vision was written, not only on paper, but also in their hearts. Finally, Saint Euphrosynos reposed in a remote Hēsykhastḗrion. The Church, knowing that a king or a philosopher is not more worthy to enter the Kingdom of Heaven than a cook, has numbered Euphrosynos the Cook among her Saints, for he knew God's will and lived according to it.. A fragment of the Saint's relics is located in the Monastery of Loukous in the Holy Metropolis of Mantineia and Kynouria in Greece. 1 The name Euphrosynos means gladness or delight.

The Consecration of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre)

The church that is honoured far above all others is that of the Holy Resurrection, which Saint Constantine the Great constructed at the place of Golgotha, where our Saviour was crucified and buried. For a long time this place had been purposely buried beneath the earth by the Jews and heathen; furthermore, during the reign of Hadrian (117-138), a temple dedicated to Aphrodite was built over the site so that this sacred place might be even further desecrated and fall into utter oblivion. It was here that the Cross was hidden. However, at the command of the pious Emperor Constantine, excavations were made and the tokens of the saving Passion were found. It was here, then, that the very great and magnificent temple named in honour of Christ God's Resurrection-the Anastasis-was built under the supervision of the blessed Helen, while Dracilian was Eparch of Palestine and Macarius was Archbishop of Jerusalem. It was the latter, also, who exalted the venerable Cross and performed the consecration of this temple in the year 336.

Epistle Reading

Plagal 2nd Tone.

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Gospel Reading

Sunday before Holy Cross

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Parish News and Events

Fellowship Hour

Please be sure to sign up for a Fellowship Hour. You can also do it together with family or friends!

The Birth of the Theotokos

On September 8 we celebrate the first of the 12 Great Feasts of the new Church year, the Birth of the Theotokos. Unfortunately, Father is out of town on the 8th. But, since we celebrate this Feast for 5 days, we will have the Divine Liturgy on the Leavetaking (Apodosis) of the Feast, Friday, September 12 at 10:00 am.

After Liturgy we will have our monthly Theolotea and talk about Old Testament foreshadowings of the Theotokos. All are invited to enjoy some tea, snacks, and discussion.

The Elevation of the Cross

This year the second of our 12 Great Feasts, The Elevation of the Cross, falls on next Sunday. Please bring some Basil to put on the tray for the service of the Elevation.

Bless Those Backpacks too!

Today all our children should bring their backpacks to be blessed, and ask God's help for them during the upcoming school year. Please bring the backpacks up front to the Sacraments Table when you arrive.

Put this Great Time on your Calendar!

The Holy Trinity Youth group invites everyone to enjoy some time together as a parish family and to celebrate the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. Come to Webster Lake (346 Webster Avenue
Franklin) on Saturday, September 13 at 1:00 pm to encourage our young people who will be diving for the Cross. Afterwards we will enjoy a parish picnic together. Please RSVP by September 1 to Alexander Newman, [email protected]. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to enjoy time together as a parish family and to celebrate this great feast!

Sunday School Begins

Our new session of Sunday School will begin on Sunday, September 14 after Communion. Thanks to Alexander Newman for providing a nice, child-sized table for the Church Hall for our youngest learners.

Parents, your children do not drive; they cannot bring themselves to church on Sunday. So, if you do not bring them, they will not become comfortable with the church and their faith. You need to as yourself each Sunday morning: Do I love sleeping in/eating breakfast/playing golf/the football/basketball/baseball/hockey team more than I love Jesus? That's the bottom line: we do what we love. I hope the answer is clear for you.

Can You Help with a Sunday School Book?

We are presently working on creating a series of children’s boos about the 12 Great Feast Days of the Church. If anyone is interested in helping with illustrating one or more of the books, please talk to Presbytera.

Are You Looking for a Deeper Dive into your Faith?

Then think about joining our new ministry, Faith and Fellowship, which will begin on Sunday, October 5 during Fellowship. We are meeting every other Sunday and exploring different topics of the Orthodox Faith, presented by different presenters. So just grab a coffee and some snacks and make your way to the Parish House. And think about what topics would be of interest to you to be covered. Everyone from new inquirers to long time faithful Orthodox are invited to come and learn more about the Faith delivered to the Saints!

Helping Hands Ministry

Do you need some help with cutting the lawn or doing some housework? These things can become difficult as we get older. If you find yourself in this dilemma, please get in touch with our Helping Hands Ministry. Members of our parish have volunteered to do yard work, small repairs, household chores or other such odd jobs, please get in touch with our Helping Hands! Please give Presbytera a call (603-953-3051) and she will put you in touch with someone to help!

Name Day Celebrations

Unfortunately, real Name Day celebrations have become less important for us than for previous generations. As a result, we have begun to lose our connections with the Saints, especially with our special patrons. In order to bring us back to celebrating our Name Days with our Parish Familly, please consider scheduling a Fellowship Hour on the Sunday nearest your Name Day! It would be nice to make the celebration special by decorating the hall with icons of the saint or special food. Dont know when your Saint is celebrated? Ask Father!

The St. Paisios Prayer Warriors

Since prayer is a vital part both of parish life and the discipline of Lent, we are going to revive our St. Paisios Prayer Warriors. If anyone is interested in being a part of this prayer ministry please let Father know. We have already begun praying for one another, for our parish family and for the world. If you have anyone you would like to have prayers for, please let Father know (no need for any details, just the first name!)
