Fellow Parishioners and Friends:

I am looking forward to seeing you this Sunday, Aug. 9 at Saint Gregory.

Reflecting on last weekend’s festival, many thanks to our three event co-chairs: Joe Cara Donna, Steve Drugas and Dennis Savas. Their planning, hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated by our parish family. Further, we of course thank our tireless volunteers who prepared, cooked, baked, cleaned, showed hospitality and led church tours. Finally, we are grateful to our friends and neighbors for supporting our festival. It was an honor to welcome and serve them.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Tenth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:1-14

At that time, Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and He revealed Himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was raised from the dead. .

Epistle Reading

10th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 17:14-23

At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."

Saints and Feasts

August 09

10th Sunday of Matthew

August 09

The Holy Apostle Matthias

After Judas by transgression fell from his apostleship (Acts 1: 25), and hanging himself out of despair ended his life with a wretched and shameful death (Matt. 27: 5), then, that the number of the Twelve not be lacking, all the disciples gathered in one place after the Ascension of the Savior (the number of men and women being 120), and they chose two men from among them, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was also surnamed Justus, and Matthias, and they set them in the midst. Then they prayed to God and cast lots, "and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles" (Acts 1: 15-26). And thus, having taken the place of Judas, Matthias fulfilled the work of apostleship and the prophecy concerning Judas, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David: "And his bishopric let another take" (Ps. 108(109):8). After this, it is said, Matthias preached the Gospel in Ethiopia, and completed his life there in martyrdom.

August 09

Constantine, Patriarch of Constantinople

Wisdom of the Fathers

Here Christ is not speaking of that faith which believes in Him undoubtingly and knows Him to be true God, but of the faith (needed) to work miracles. If ye have faith, He said, so exceedingly warm and burning as a grain of mustard seed (for these are its qualities), and if it is believed without a doubt that ye will perform signs, then ye will receive such power, that if ye desire to move the very mountains, ye will move them.
St. John Chrysostom
The Gospel Commentary, edited by Hieromonk German Ciuba, 2002, 4th Century

For a man to have such faith appears simple, but it is, on the contrary, something very lofty, not easily attained by many. Such faith is born of boldness before God; but such boldness comes (only) from pleasing God. Beloved, great labour is needed to acquire, through pleasing God, such boldness before Him that one firmly believes that he will grant all that one asks; as it is written, Ask, and it shall be given to you.
St. John Chrysostom
The Gospel Commentary: edited by Hieromonk German Ciuba, 2002., 4th Century

FESTIVAL REFLECTIONS & GRATITUDE
Many thanks to our 2026 festival co-chairs: Joe Cara Donna, Steve Drugas and Dennis Savas. Their planning, hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated by our parish family. Further, we of course thank our tireless parishioner volunteers who planned, prepared, cooked, baked, cleaned, showed hospitality and led church tours. Their caring efforts made all the difference. Finally, we are grateful to our friends and neighbors for supporting our festival. It was an honor to welcome and serve them.

FESTIVAL OUTREACH BOXES: TAKE ONE TODAY
Our parish offered 24 boxes of food to families in need during last weekend’s festival. Attendees were free to come pick up a box in the Narthex or share it with another person, no questions asked. We now invite parishioners to bring a box to a neighbor, colleague or other person who might need a little help. There is no need to check in with anyone—please receive a box today with our prayers and love.

PARAKLESIS & DORMITION SERVICES
This week we will offer two Paraklesis Services: Wed (Aug. 10) and Fri (Aug .12). These brief, poetic services celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation and the tender love of Christ and the Theotokos for one another—and all humanity. Our faithful are also invited to bring names of the living for commemoration during the services. On Sat. (Aug. 15) will offer Orthros and Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Dormition. Please join us for this solemn feast as we recognize the role of the Theotokos in the life-saving mission of Jesus Christ.

PHILOPTOCHOS BACK-TO-SCHOOL DRIVE, ALL MONTH
Throughout August, please bring school backpacks (boys and girls, all ages), crayons, rulers, pens, pencils and other school supplies to Saint Gregory. They can be dropped off in the Narthex donation bin. Just in time for the new school year, they will be shared with local helping agencies for distribution.

INSTANT CHURCH DIRECTORY NOW ACTIVE
Our new online Instant Church Directory app is up and running. This week, parishioners received an invitation email from our program administrators with instructions on how to access your/your family's profile. Just follow the directions in the email, and you will soon be able to edit and personalize your profile. See the helpful flyer in the eBulletin and weekly email. Contact Fr. Alex or Steve Christo ([email protected]) with any questions.

GOYA OFFICERS & UPDATES

STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY 2026
Many thanks to all those Stewards who have already committed for 2026. If you have not yet had the opportunity, now would be a wonderful time. 2026 Stewardship materials are in the Narthex and available on our parish website's Stewardship page.

OUR PARISH LIBRARY IN 2026
Last summer, one of our loving parishioners worked diligently to revitalize our library area with Fr. Alex. The space is now nicely organized and cleaned—and the shelves arranged by subject area (prayer, pastoral theology, history, etc.). We still need a librarian to manage borrowing and the ongoing maintenance of this beautiful space. Would you like to engage this ministry for 2026? Please contact Father if interested.

FELLOWSHIP HOUR SIGN-UP RESOURCES
All parishioners are invited to host Fellowship Hour on a coming Sunday. In addition to the sign-up poster in the hall, we can now easily learn more and sign up online. Fellowship Hour is a beloved, significant tradition at our parish that speaks to Christian fellowship and hospitality. Thanks in advance for your support, and contact Fellowship Hour Chair Brian Kaufman with any questions: [email protected]
