A Word from Father Alex

Fellow Parishioners and Friends:

This Sunday following Divine Liturgy, we will celebrate our annual parish Vasilopita. We often think of this as a moment to celebrate ministry leaders and remind us of the many facets of church life. These things are very true and appropriate. However, it is easy to forget that at the very core of the celebration is the life of Saint Basil the Great.

When we bake a coin into that sweet bread, it is not about "luck" or anything temporal. It is about participating in the great compassion and philanthropy of Saint Basil. In the name of Christ, he made secret gifts to those in need, drawing attention not to himself but to the goodness of the Lord.

So this Sunday, come worship with us and partake in this bread. We will offer a brief service during which we bless our Vasilopitas. Then Father Manny and I will call up ministry leaders and other representatives to receive a piece--and of course we will then offer a piece to all our parishioners, including our Sunday School children.

Together, we can raise the memory of Saint Basil high and commit to multiplying the gift of this holy bread in our lives and, especially, in the lives of those in need.

Looking forward to seeing you Sunday,

Fr. Alex

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Seventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:1-10

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that He must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Epistle Reading

Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Tatiana the Martyr of Rome

Saint Tatiana was the daughter of a most distinguished consul of Rome. She became a deaconess of the Church, and for her confession of the Faith of Christ, she endured many torments. As she was suffering, angels punished her tormentors with the same torments they inflicted on her, until they cried out that they could no longer endure the scourges invisibly brought upon them. She was beheaded during the reign of Alexander Severus (111-135).

PARISH VASILOPITA CELEBRATION, THIS SUNDAY JANUARY 12TH
Following Divine Liturgy, we will celebrate the brief service of the Vasilopita and offer pieces to our ministry leaders and all our faithful. This is a moment for us to consider the great philanthropy and compassion of Saint Basil the Great—and to reflect on how we might bless others with our “bread” in 2025. Happy New Year to all!

PARISH COUNCIL PLEDGE, THIS SUNDAY JANUARY 12TH
Last week, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios confirmed our 2025 Parish Council elections. Congratulations to Steve Christo, Steve Drugas, Phil LaFond, Greta Loukos, George Psilakis and Lou Zagami. Today before the Vasilopita celebration, our new members will take the Parish Council Pledge of the Archdiocese.

PARISH FEAST DAY EVENTS: JANUARY 24TH - 26TH
Each year our parish feast day is January 25th. This is a time to give thanks for Saint Gregory the Theologian, to reflect on his importance as a leader of the ancient Church and to learn more about his God-inspired teachings. This is also an occasion to welcome local clergy and parishioners to our parish to celebrate with us. With these things in mind, please save these dates and spread the word to family and friends:
***January 24th, 6 pm: Great Vespers & Reception
***January 25th: Orthros & Divine Liturgy (usual times)
***January 26th: Regular Sunday services and feast-day brunch

PHILOPTOCHOS COOKIE WALK, FEBRUARY 9TH
The annual Cookie Walk is on for the 9th. We are preparing to fill our table with a wide variety of cookies for purchase; during Fellowship Hour, we will "walk" along the cookie-filled table, selecting a 1/2 dozen, dozen, or more, treats, knowing that the money raised will go directly to local charities and service programs. Philoptochos members are asked to donate home-made cookies—from simple to fancy, classic to gourmet and comfort to unique. Contact Ann Johnson to confirm your donation.

STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY 2025
Many thanks to all those Stewards who have helped us “finish strong” for 2024. As we move into the new year, we hope and pray God will help us embrace parish giving with renewed enthusiasm and commitment. With this year’s theme in mind (“Your Own of Your Own”), may we all discover the love and dedication to offer our heartfelt gifts to the Lord’s church. Visit the Stewardship pages of our parish website to learn more about Stewardship and to access our forthcoming 2025 online materials: Stewardship Program 2024 | Saint Gregory the Theologian

119th Epiphany Cross-Retriever Luc Boillot Continues Family Legacy in Tarpon Springs, Florida

01/06/2025

Boillot’s retrieval was made doubly blessed in that it was a family affair - just after emerging from the bayou, Boillot shared a tearful embrace with his uncle Jerry Theophilopoulos, who retrieved the cross forty years ago today. Boillot recounted that he dreamed last night he’d retrieve the cross, and that sharing such a moment with his uncle was “[an] incredible emotional, spiritual feeling."
