A Word from Father Alex

Fellow Parishioners and Friends:

I hope and pray this note finds you, and yours, well. Of course, this week we faced yet another anniversary of the disasterous events of Sep. 11, 2001. May our nation's heart continue to heal, and may the memory of all lost be eternal!

On a brighter note, I am very much looking forward to the start of Sunday School classes this Sunday. Just before Holy Communion, Fr. Manny and I will bless our children and their teachers, as they embark on a new year of learning and spiritual growth.

In addition this Sunday, our GOYAns will have a welcome and planning meeting with Mr. Christo. We have a thoughtful, compassionate and active group of GOYAns (6 – 12th grade), and I’m very proud of them all.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to celebrate Philoptochos at the open house on Sep. 22nd, and I’ll also restart Orthodoxy 101 on the 29th. Those interested in coming into the Orthodox Faith through Baptism or Chrismation are welcome to join, along with any parishioners and friends just interested in learning more about our treasured faith.

See you Sunday and have a wonderful, safe weekend,

Fr. Alex

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

First Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Matthew 28:16-20

At that time, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen."

Epistle Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

September 15

Sunday after Holy Cross

September 15

Nikitas the Great Martyr

This Saint was of high birth among the Goths beyond the Danube River. He was taken by Athanaric, pagan ruler of the Goths, and after being tortured, was burned to death for his confession of Christ. According to some, this took place during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great; according to others, under the Emperor Gratian.

Wisdom of the Fathers

The key to knowledge is the humility of Christ. The door of the Kingdom of Heaven is open, not to those who only know in their learned minds the mysteries of faith and the commandments of their Creator, but to those who have progressed far enough to live by them.
St. Bede the Venerable
Unknown, 8th century

To deny oneself means to give up one's bad habits; to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad thoughts and desires; to suppress every evil thought; to avoid occasions of sin; not to desire or to do anything out of self-love, but to do everything out of love for God. To deny oneself, according to St. Paul means "to be dead to sin. . . but alive to God."
St. Innocent of Alaska
The Lenten Spring, SVS Press, p. 147, 19th Century

ONLINE GIVING TRANSITION THIS FALL
Our parish will soon transition our online giving platform from Vanco to Servant Keeper, which will offer our Stewards improved services. For now, the Vanco platform is still in service, and as soon as the new platform is available we will share the news with our parish. Thank you for your assistance and patience with this important transition.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY & FELLOWSHIP THIS FALL
Over the past few years, several parishioners have expressed interest in forming a men’s Bible study, which would also provide an opportunity for friendship and mutual support. This could be a breakfast-oriented group (before work), late afternoon, evening or whatever is convenient for our parishioners. Fr. Alex would like to hear from those interested and then make plans to meet. Please contact Father directly.

ONLINE GIVING TRANSITION THIS FALL
Our parish will soon transition our online giving platform from Vanco to Servant Keeper. Among other benefits, the new platform will be more cost-effective for our parish and offer our parishioners and donors an easier and more flexible experience. For now, the Vanco platform is still in service, and as soon as the new platform is available we will share the news with our parish. Thank you for your assistance and patience with this important transition.

A LOVING REMINDER: ENTERING & LEAVING THE NAVE
When entering the nave for worship, please make every effort to come in via the side aisles. Likewise, if you need to step out for a while, try to use the side aisles. The center aisle is largely for vital moments within our services: returning from receiving Holy Communion, processions, censing the faithful, departing after Antidoron, etc. Of course, we always realize there will be exceptional moments, but we ask our faithful to keep this request in mind.

KOLIVA PREPARATION
At any given time of the year, our faithful will seek help in the preparation of Koliva for memorials. Fellow parishioner Gina Drugas is now offering this service, with a cost of $100 per Koliva plate. Please contact Gina to learn more and make arrangements: [email protected]

FELLOWSHIP HOUR SIGN-UP RESOURCES
All parishioners are invited to host Fellowship Hour on a coming Sunday. In addition to the sign-up poster in the hall, we can now easily learn more and sign up online. Fellowship Hour is a beloved, significant tradition at our parish that speaks to Christian fellowship and hospitality. Thanks in advance for your support, and contact Fellowship Hour Chair Brian Kaufman with any questions: [email protected]

RIDES TO CHURCH
George Dimitriou, our Driving Ministry chair, would be happy to help you or a loved one make it to Saint Gregory for worship and events. Contact George directly: [email protected]; 781.769.2085.
