A Word from Father Alex

Fellow Parishioners and Friends:

I wish you a blessed Feast of the Dormition (Aug. 15) and hope you will join us this Sunday for Divine Liturgy at Saint Gregory. Our parish home is never complete without you.

As I mentioned in last week’s message, our parish festival is quickly approaching on Aug. 24. Many thanks to all those who volunteered last week with food preparations, along with parishioners who have commited to helping on the day of the festival. At this point all of our volunteer spots for the coming week and the 24th are covered, but please keep spreading the word to friends and family, and make sure to join us on the 24th to enjoy the fun, food and fellowship. I also could use help touring people through our beautiful church; please let me know if you have an hour or more to spare.

Looking to next month, please save the date of Sep. 8 for our annual parish picnic and ministry celebration. Sunday School teachers will be on hand to greet our children, and our GOYAns will hold their fall leadership meeting. A list of donation requests is within your eBulletin—please contact me directly if you can help out.

God bless you and have a wonderful weekend,

Fr. Alex

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eighth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:11-18

At that time, Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb, and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus has lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni," which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and she told them that He had said these things to her.

Epistle Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Saints and Feasts

August 18

8th Sunday of Matthew

August 18

Floros & Lauros the Monk-martyrs of Illyria

These Martyrs were twin brothers, and stonemasons. After the martyrdom of their teachers Proclus and Maximus, they left Byzantium and came to the city of Ulpiana in Illyricum, where a certain Licinius hired them to build a temple for the idols. The wages he gave them, they distributed to the poor, and when the temple was built, Floros and Lauros gathered the paupers, and with their help put ropes about the necks of the idols, pulled them to the ground, and furnished the temple as a church. When Licinius learned of this, he had the paupers burned alive in a furnace. Floros and Lauros were tormented, then cast into a deep well, where they gave up their souls to the Lord. When their holy relics were recovered years later, they poured forth myrrh and worked many miracles; they were enshrined in Constantinople.

Wisdom of the Fathers

And another thing too we learn, the self-restraint of the disciples which they practised in necessary things, and how little they accounted of food.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century

For being twelve, they had five loaves only and two fishes; so secondary to them were the things of the body: so did they cling to the things spiritual only. And not even that little did they hold fast, but gave up even it when asked.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century

UPCOMING GREEK FESTIVAL, AUGUST 24TH
Many thanks to all who have donated their time and talent for our upcoming festival. From food preparations last week, and commitments to work on the day of the festival, all your help and support is appreciated to help make this event a success! All of our volunteer spots for the coming week and festival day are filled, but please keep spreading the word and make sure to join us for food and fun on the 24th. We also want to thank everyone who has donated to our Yiayia’s Attic tables. At this time, donations for the attic are closed.

2025 ECCLESIASTICAL CALENDARS SPONSORSHIPS, BY AUGUST 28TH
Every year, we are presented with the opportunity for a parish family to sponsor the upcoming Ecclesiastical Calendars. Last year, the Dimitriou Family graciously sponsored these calendars for our parishioners to have in their homes and offices. If you or your family would like to sponsor the 2025 calendars, please contact Gina ([email protected]; 508.337.9986) in the church office by August 28th.

PHILOPTOCHOS SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE, NOW - SEPTEMBER 1ST
Through the 1st, Philoptochos is collecting school supplies to benefit the Mansfield and Attleboro public schools. Please place donated items into the designated bin located in the narthex. Our Amazon link details specific items that are needed. Please see Ann Johnson with questions.

FALL PICNIC AND MINISTRY CELEBRATION, SEP. 8TH
As we look forward to fall and a new year of youth and adult ministries at Saint Gregory, we will enjoy our annual celebratory picnic on the 8th, immediately following Divine Liturgy. Our Sunday School leaders will be on hand to register our children (classes begin Sep. 15th), and our GOYAns will hold a leadership meeting with Mr. Christo. If you can bring a main, side, dessert or drink item, please contact Fr. Alex. We need the following: Hamburger/hotdog buns; potato/macaroni salad; veggie platter; fruit platter/salad; other side ideas; water, juice and soda; desserts. Other "mains" are very much welcome too.

SUNDAY SCHOOL RESUMES, SEP. 15TH
Our teachers are busy preparing for another year of learning, faith and friendship with our children. Before Holy Communion on the 15th, Fr. Alex will bless our children and teachers and give them beautiful basil to take home. Register your children here or sign up at the Sep. 8th picnic.

SAINT GREGORY GOLF TOURNAMENT, OCT. 10TH
For a fun and dynamic change of pace, our 2024 tournament will be held at Top Golf in Canton, MA. The tournament page—along with registration and sponsorship information—is now available. Please save the date and plan to join us.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY & FELLOWSHIP THIS FALL
Over the past few years, several parishioners have expressed interest in forming a men’s Bible study, which would also provide an opportunity for friendship and mutual support. This could be a breakfast-oriented group (before work), late afternoon, evening or whatever is convenient for our parishioners. Fr. Alex would like to hear from those interested and then make plans to meet. Please contact Father directly.

A LOVING REMINDER: ENTERING & LEAVING THE NAVE
When entering the nave for worship, please make every effort to come in via the side aisles. Likewise, if you need to step out for a while, try to use the side aisles. The center aisle is largely for vital moments within our services: returning from receiving Holy Communion, processions, censing the faithful, departing after Antidoron, etc. Of course, we always realize there will be exceptional moments, but we ask our faithful to keep this request in mind.

ALTAR & MYRRHBEARER SERVICE THIS SUMMER
Throughout the summer, all Altar servers and Myrrhbearers are welcome to come serve whenever they are in church. Altar servers can come in as usual, and Myrrhbearers/parents are asked to contact Fr. Alex to pick a date for service. We’ll resume our regular schedules in the fall.

KOLIVA PREPARATION
At any given time of the year, our faithful will seek help in the preparation of Koliva for memorials. Fellow parishioner Gina Drugas is now offering this service, with a cost of $100 per Koliva plate. Please contact Gina to learn more and make arrangements: [email protected]

FELLOWSHIP HOUR SIGN-UP RESOURCES
All parishioners are invited to host Fellowship Hour on a coming Sunday. In addition to the sign-up poster in the hall, we can now easily learn more and sign up online. Fellowship Hour is a beloved, significant tradition at our parish that speaks to Christian fellowship and hospitality. Thanks in advance for your support, and contact Fellowship Hour Chair Brian Kaufman with any questions: [email protected]

RIDES TO CHURCH
George Dimitriou, our Driving Ministry chair, would be happy to help you or a loved one make it to Saint Gregory for worship and events. Contact George directly: [email protected]; 781.769.2085.

LOST & FOUND
When parishioners find items about the church, they leave them with the church office. You will find a mail tray labled for lost and found. If you have misplaced a small item, or found one, please stop by the office.

CHURCH OFFICE HOURS
Fr. Alex: Tue. & Thur., 9 am - 1 pm. Wed., 1 - 4 pm; or by appointment when convenient for our parishioners. Please note that on occasion, Fr. Alex may be seeing to a pastoral situation, visiting with another parishioner, attending a Metropolis event, or otherwise engaged in Church life during office hours.
