A Word from Father Alex

Dearest Parishioners and Friends:

I am so looking forward to worship and friendship at our Saint Gregory parish home this Sunday. Every day at 1007 West is a good one, full of encouragement and Christ-centered activity, as far as I'm concerned.

In addition to all the other events happening this Sunday, from Sunday School to the launch of the Philopochos Thanksgiving Meal Drive, we are looking forward to the Saint Modestos Pet Blessing Event. Saint Modestos is celebrated on Dec. 18 each year and was well-known for blessing cattle and other animals; he recognized them as vital aspects of God's creation, worthy of nurturing and blessing. What God made is good, and while we have a unique relationship with God, made in His Image and Likeness, our furred, feathered and scaly friends are very much a part of his amazing creation.

With these things in mind, I hope you'll join me between 1 and 2 pm this Sunday, Nov. 7 for this blessing event, which will be held completely outdoors. While the actual blessing prayers will be said from 1 - 1:15, come anytime to have your pet blessed. We'll have some hot cocoa, cookies and event dog and cat treats available. In addition, our seminarian, Lee Morest, who is an excellent photographer, will be on hand to snap candids and portraits of you and your special "besties."

Finally, if you'd like to help our on the 7th or be involved in some way (such as helping me with threats and set up), please let me know.
I could use a hand, and it's always more fun to do things together.

Don't forget to DVR the Pats (they'll do okay without you watching for a bit) and see you this Sunday,

Fr. Alex

ORTHODOX LIFE: “OPENING THE DOOR,” CONTINUES NOV 10
Many of us have encountered the occult and other unconventional spiritual practices—and we may very well wonder what the Orthodox Church believes, have questions and wonder what guidance is before us. In this informal series, we're looking at everything from the Neo-Pagan and “Teen Witch” movements of the last century, to practices like tarot card reading and channeling, to the “Charlie Charlie Challenge,” Ouija Boards and other phenomena that may lead us to unintentionally open certain spiritual “doors." All are welcome to join us, and no previous experience with Bible study is needed. All reading material will be supplied. Our next meeting will be on the 10th, 6:30 - 8 pm (refreshments will be served). Contact Fr. Alex with any questions: alexanderchetsas@gmail.com.

ORTHODOXY 101, NOV 21
In addition to Orthodox Life: "Opening the Door" this fall, we are offering our faithful a straight forward, approachable introduction to Orthodoxy session on select Sundays, following Holy Communion. This is an ideal opportunity for those interested in coming into the Orthodox Faith or just wanting to learn more about the Church. Lou Zagami leads each session following Holy Communion in the classrooms area unless otherwise noted. Lou is also very willing to continue these discussions individually and/or in small group meetings in the weeks and months to come. Please contact him if you are interested: lzagami@comcast.net.

Alex package up the meals and then head to the Christo home for refreshments and relaxation. Please look for emails from Mr. and Mrs. Christo with all the details--see you then!

STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY, DEC 5
We have slated this year's Stewardship Sunday event for the 5th. This will be a time for us to learn about the 2022 Stewardship Ministry Program, reflect on our ministries and celebrate our Stewards with a wonderful breakfast. More details to come soon. In addition, as we look toward the conclusion of our 2021 campaign, thanks to all of our Saint Gregory parishioners who have already committed and worked to fulfill their offerings of time, talent and treasure for this year. If you haven't had an opportunity to do so yet, now is an ideal time not only to commit but also enact the financial aspect of your Stewardship. 2021 Commitment Cards can be completed online, and we can also give online via our website Stewardship Page: www.saintgregorythetheologian.org/stewardship/. GivePlus is another great option for parish giving: Home | St Gregory The Theologian Church (myvanco.com)

In addition to our elections, we will hold our "fall" assembly on the 12th following services. Please make plans to join us for this important meeting our parish family. Those participating should be 2021 Stewards of Saint Gregory. Thank you in advance for your participation.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT, DEC 19
We are so excited to be presenting our Annual Christmas Pageant live in person on Sunday, December 19!  Last year we all pulled together to make the most of our virtual world, in our efforts to keep the tradition and holiday spirit alive at St. Gregory. We did the best we could, and our kids and families were amazing! This year we are back and can't wait to bring the spirit to our entire St. Gregory Parish. We invite all families who are comfortalbe doing so to engage your children with this beautiful event--we want all our children back and celebrating together as in past years, as much as possible. Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Epistle Reading

7th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19

Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

Gospel Reading

7th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 8:41-56

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

33 Martyrs of Melitene

These holy Martyrs confessed during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian in the year 290. Of them, Saint Hieron was from Tyana in Cappadocia, a husbandman, of great bodily strength and high nobility of soul. As he was at work digging in his field, certain soldiers came to impress him into military service. He, however, not wishing to keep company with the impious, refused, and with his wooden tool alone drove away the armed soldiers, who fled in fear because of his strength. Later, however, he went of his own free will, and confessed Christ before the governor. His right hand was cut off, and he was imprisoned with thirty-two others, whom he strengthened in the Faith of Christ. Together they were all beheaded outside the city of Melitene in Armenia.

Lazarus the Wonderworker

Our righteous Father Lazarus was born in 967 in Magnesia of Asia Minor, and passed through various regions of the East, visiting monasteries. He was tonsured a monk, and then ordained priest, at the Monastery of Mar Sabbas in Palestine. In 1005 he returned to his homeland, and beginning in the year 1012, he built the monasteries that are on Mount Galesion. He raised up a pillar, on which he lived as a stylite for many years, enduring unspeakable hardships for the love of Christ, and reposed in the Lord in deep old age in the year 1053, during the reign of Constantine Monomachus (1042-1055).
