Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Tone

While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding thy most pure body. Thou didst rise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. For which caused the heavenly powers cried aloud unto thee, O Giver of life, Glory to thy Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to thy kingdom! Glory to thy providence, O thou who alone art the lover of mankind.

Apolytikion of All Saints of Antioch in the Fourth Tone

O fellow trav’lers in the way of the faithful, the saints of Antioch now let us all honor: the pure and blest Apostles with the hierarchs, martyrs with the righteous ones, their worn path wisely walking, wond’ring at their holy lives overflowing with wonders; thus let us walk in peace and fear of God so that we all win the dwelling in Paradise.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant: O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned, but be thou quick, o good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee. Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplications, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Gospel Reading

2nd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 4:18-23

At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

ST MARY GUIDEBOOK

We recently released a St Mary Guidebook for our parishioners. The Guidebook helps to provide insight into our practices, traditions, and expectations at St Mary. A hard copy of the Guidebook is available in the church foyer. If you prefer an electronic copy, let Fr Aaron know and he will email it to you. Each week we will provide a brief snippet from the Guidebook to help familiarize everyone with it. See below for this week's section.

STEWARDSHIP

One result of a life of prayer aided by a fasting discipline is a life lived in service and sacrifice to others—be that a spouse, child, friend, enemy, neighbor, and/or stranger. We are called by God to receive His love, and having received His love freely, to "freely give" (Matthew 10:8). This giving can take many forms: time, attention, care, friendship, support, or money; but all are expressions of love—God’s love, received from Him and passed on to those around us.

TITHES AND OFFERINGS

Properly speaking, our Almsgiving is distinct from our offerings to the Church. The earliest practice of giving in the early Church was a brief time in the Apostolic age when ALL of one's belongings were offered to God, and "laid at the Apostles' feet" (Acts 4:35). It wasn't long before a return to tithing, as inherited from Christianity's Jewish heritage, became the Church's tradition. In the practice of tithing, the members of the community of Faith commit to its material sustenance and its charitable works by an offering of ten percent of one's income. While every household has different financial circumstances, we should all strive to cultivate a Christian perspective on the responsible use of money and resources for the Kingdom of God.

Many contemporary Orthodox Christians are unfamiliar with tithing due to a variety of historical influences. Traditionally in the Orthodox Church, we never have dues or other minimum donations required for membership. Rather, each member is encouraged to see themselves as stewards—not of “their” own belongings, but of what belongs to God and has been placed in our care.

Our community of St. Mary has been blessed greatly by God with a beautiful space for worship and the services of a resident Parish Priest, which are a blessing that contribute to the health and growth of our community. It should not go unnoticed, however, that the Lord accomplishes this through the tithes and offering of our members and families. Since it was by sacrificial tithes and offerings that God has blessed us thus far, we uphold this goal for all our members, knowing that this step of faith is a blessing to all who take it.

Whether through a full tithe, one that exceeds it, or one that works towards it, every adult member of the community bears the blessing of the responsibility to financially support our community. This financial support allows us to maintain the gift of the community entrusted to us and allows us to grow in the future.

Members of our parish community give in different frequencies. Some give weekly, others monthly or quarterly, while still others offer their entire tithe on an annual basis. The most important aspect of our offerings is that we give on a sacrificial basis.

PRIEST DISCRETIONARY FUND

Our parish maintains a fund to be used for those in need, whether within our parish community or "outside” our parish. Donations to this fund can be made by giving cash or check to St Mary Orthodox Church, earmarked Priest Discretionary Fund. All members of the community are encouraged to donate regularly to this fund as it helps us discreetly help our own parishioners in need. For questions about this fund, please see the Parish Priest.

Saints and Feasts

June 24

Nativity of the Forerunner John the Baptist

He that was greater than all who are born of women, the Prophet who received God's testimony that he surpassed all the Prophets, was born of the aged and barren Elizabeth (Luke 1: 7) and filled all his kinsmen, and those that lived round about, with gladness and wonder. But even more wondrous was that which followed on the eighth day when he was circumcised, that is, the day on which a male child receives his name. Those present called him Zacharias, the name of his father. But the mother said, "Not so, but he shall be called John." Since the child's father was unable to speak, he was asked, by means of a sign, to indicate the child's name. He then asked for a tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And immediately Zacharias' mouth was opened, his tongue was loosed from its silence of nine months, and filled with the Holy Spirit, he blessed the God of Israel, Who had fulfilled the promises made to their fathers, and had visited them that were sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, and had sent to them the light of salvation. Zacharias prophesied concerning the child also, saying that he would be a Prophet of the Most High and Forerunner of Jesus Christ. And the child John, who was filled with grace, grew and waxed strong in the Spirit; and he was in the wilderness until the day of his showing to Israel (Luke 1:57-80). His name is a variation of the Hebrew "Johanan," which means "Yah is gracious."

June 25

Fevronia the Righteous Martyr

This Martyr practiced the ascetic discipline in Nisibis of Mesopotamia; she was of such great beauty that the report of her came to the persecutor Selenus, and every attempt was made to make her deny Christ. After many horrible tortures, she was cruelly dismembered by the executioners, then beheaded, in the year 310 (or, according to some, in 302, during the reign of Diocletian).

June 27

Sampson the Innkeeper of Constantinople

Saint Samson was from Rome and flourished during the reign of Saint Justinian the Great. Being a physician, he came to Constantinople, where he so distinguished himself for his virtue and his love for the sick and the poor that Patriarch Menas ordained him priest. The Emperor Justinian was healed by him, and out of gratitude built him a large hospital, which was afterwards known as "The Hospice of Samson." Saint Samson is one of the Holy Unmercenaries.

June 28

Righteous Fathers Sergius and Herman, Founders of Valaam Monastery

By their life and teachings, our righteous Fathers Sergius and Herman did much to spread and confirm Orthodoxy among the Karelian Finns, who had suffered much oppression at the hands of Swedes of the Latin creed. They founded on Lake Ladoga the renowned Monastery of Valaam, which later became one of the chief centers of the monastic life. Both Saints reposed about 1353.
