Message from the Dean

Haros3

Next week our Cathedral will begin the annual ritual of Ministry Registration. Our Ministries Fair will feature each of our ministries with information about the exciting and uplifting plans for the coming program year and various opportunities for parents and other interested adults to find a ministry in which they would like to volunteer. It will be an exciting two weeks as families who have been overseas this summer return home, and other families who have been away on vacations, reconnect with each other and the Church to get ready for our program year. In just two short weeks, school will begin and our programs will follow closely behind. Ready or not… here they come!

As the curiosity and excitement build, it is important to be reminded of the importance of youth ministry. With a vibrant and properly focused youth ministry, our youth will grow closer to Jesus Christ and learn to love Him and His Church more than anything else that competes for their attention. Without a vibrant youth ministry, our children will grow distant from the Church, as many have already left our community for other faiths. So, what is a vibrant and properly focused youth ministry?

Greek Orthodox youth ministries have only one single purpose; to provide a place and time for our youth to live their Orthodox Christian life. If it is a dance, it is an Orthodox Christian dance. If it is an athletic event, it is an Orthodox Christian athletic event. Proper Orthodox Christian youth ministry is designed to provide a social experience in which our youth can reinforce their Orthodox Christian way of life.

Let’s face it, there are plenty of opportunities the world is already offering our youth to live a life contrary to Christ and His Church. Our ministries will be different from the world. Our youth will still dance and play games, but they will never forget they are first, and most importantly, Orthodox Christians and members of the Body of Christ.

If we don’t teach our youth to learn to love and live the Orthodox Christian Faith, the world will surely teach them not to. Our Lord said, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8.34) The way of the world is one of self-focus. The way of the Church is Christ-focus.

Of course, it begins at home and from the life each family chooses to live, so each Cathedral program will also strive to provide families with opportunities to reinforce the Orthodox Christian way of life at home. Throughout the year, the Cathedral will host a variety of special programs with this sole purpose in mind.

It all begins next week, when you register your children for the important youth ministries offered by the Cathedral. I pray you will take full advantage of these opportunities and bring your children to the Cathedral and her programs.

Prayer for a Sick Person

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ.  Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete health.  For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eighth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:11-18

At that time, Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that He had said these things to her.

Eighth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Grave Mode.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

8th Sunday of Matthew

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

Thou didst abolish death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open Paradise to the thief; Thou didst transform the myrrh-bearers' lamentation, and didst bid Thine Apostles to preach that Thou art risen, O Christ God, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Mode

As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Joseph the Righteous of Arimathea

Saint Joseph of Arimathea was a prominent Jewish leader during the time of Jesus Christ. He is mentioned in the Gospels as being a rich man from Armiathea who was a secret disciple of Christ due to his status in the Sanhedrin. After the crucifixion and death of our Lord, Joseph approached Pontius Pilate out of piety and asked for the body of Jesus so that he might bury it honorably. He, together with Saint Nicodemus, removed the body of Christ from the cross in the presence of the Theotokos and the Myrrh-Bearing Women, wrapped it in a linen shroud, anointed it with spices, and laid it in a new tomb that he owned. This disciple later traveled the world proclaiming the Gospel until he reposed in peace in England. The Church commemorates him individually on July 31st and along with the Myrrh-Bearing Women and Nicodemus on the 3rd Sunday of Pascha (the Sunday of the Holy Myrrh-Bearers).

The Holy Seven Maccabee Children, Solomone Their Mother, and Eleazar Their Teacher

The names of the Holy Maccabees are Abim, Anthony, Guria, Eleazar, Eusebona, Achim, and Marcellus. They were Jews by race and exact keepers of the Laws of the Fathers. They lived during the reign of Antiochus, who was surnamed Epiphanes ("Illustrious"), the King of Syria and an implacable enemy of the Jews. Having subjugated their whole nation and done many evil things to them, not sparing to assail the most sacred matters of their Faith, he constrained them, among other things, to partake of swine's flesh, which was forbidden by the Law. Then these pious youths, on being apprehended together with their mother and their teacher, were constrained to set at nought the Law, and were subjected to unspeakable tortures: wrackings, the breaking of their bones, the flaying of their flesh, fire, dismemberment, and such things as only a tyrant's mind and a bestial soul is able to contrive. But when they had endured all things courageously and showed in deed that the mind is sovereign over the passions and is able to conquer them if it so desires, they gloriously ended their lives in torments, surrendering their life for the sake of the observance of the divine Law. The first to die was their teacher Eleazar, then all the brethren in the order of their age. As for their wondrous mother Solomone, "filled with a courageous spirit, and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly wrath" (II Macc. 7:21), she was present at her children's triumph over the tyrant, strengthening them in their struggle for the sake of their Faith, and enduring stout-heartedly their sufferings for the sake of their hope in the Lord. After her last and youngest son had been perfected in martyrdom, when she was about to be seized to be put to death, she cast herself into the fire that they might not touch her, and was thus deemed worthy of a blessed end together with her sons, in the year 168 before Christ.

An offering of oil

Following the ancient tradition of the Temple as commanded by God, Orthodox Christians bring an offering of olive oil to be burned in the Church lamps continually, serving as a reminder of the presence of the Light of God. And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually (Exodus 27.20) We invite anyone to make an offering of oil to the Church, along with the names of loved ones and friends who are alive in the Lord or alive with us on Earth, so that we may pray for you, and your friends and family.

Authority and Passion
$16.00
His Eminence Demetrios Trakatellis, Archbishop of America, discusses the Christological aspects of the Gospel of St. Mark. The Archbishop writes in the preface,  this book has been written with only one purpose: "to offer to the reader the vision of the true person of the Lord as it is revealed by the Gospel according to Mark."  A great tool for the average reader to better understand the second Gospel.

The Orthodox Way
$16.00
This book is a general account of the doctrine, worship, and life of Orthodox Christians.  The meaning of Orthodox doctrine for the life of the individual Christian is presented, not as an abstract proposition or system of beliefs, practices and customs, but as an aid for living the Orthodox Way.  A wealth of texts is drawn from theologians and spiritual writers of all ages to assist you on your way.

The Suitcase – A Story About Giving
$15.00
This beautifully illustrated book celebrates a young child's enthusiasm to put into practice the words of Christ: to feed and clothe the poor; help the needy; and love one's neighbor. Thomas’ family marvels at the items he has packed into his suitcase after hearing a stirring homily at Church. The Suitcase eloquently teaches about giving, serving, and sharing our faith.

Raising them Right
$10.00
A saint’s advice on raising children. Saint Theophan the Recluse, although from the 19th century, has an extraordinary ability to communicate with modern Westerners. This classic provides both practical and spiritual insight and direction into a variety of practical areas, such the spiritual and psychological development of children through their teens and preserving grace in a child's life.

Wisdom of the Fathers

And another thing too we learn, the self-restraint of the disciples which they practised in necessary things, and how little they accounted of food.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century

For being twelve, they had five loaves only and two fishes; so secondary to them were the things of the body: so did they cling to the things spiritual only. And not even that little did they hold fast, but gave up even it when asked.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century
