Sunday, September 10 - We are cancelling services on Sunday, September 10th, as are all our area parishes due to Hurricane Irma.
Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. O Lord, as you saved your apostles from perishing in a storm by calming wind and waves on your command, so now keep us safe and sound in this hurricane. Grant us favorable and gentle weather. Protect us from the unpredictable elements of nature. Steer us from storm, flood, fire, hurricane, tornado, illness, injury, disaster and sudden death. Preserve us from all evil and harm for we, though sinful, are nonetheless the work of Your hands. For to You belong all glory, honor, and worship to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

Third Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20
When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.
After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.
Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."
So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.
Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.
Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.
Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17
The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

These Martyrs, sisters according to the flesh, were from Bithynia. They lived in virginity on a mountain near the Pythian hot springs of Bithynia, devoting themselves to asceticism and prayer. Betrayed to the local governor, Fronto, they were subjected to frightful tortures, and so gave up their holy souls into the hands of God. They contested for the Faith during the reign of Maximian, in the year 304.
This saint lived in the fifth century. Out of remorse for the adultery that she committed with another man, she fled from her husband's house, renamed herself Theodore, clothed herself as a man, and pretending to be a eunuch, entered a monastery of men. Her identity as a woman was discovered only after her death.
Message from Metropolitan Alexios
September 7, 2017
My Beloved Ones,
“Deliver this community and city, O Lord, and every city and town,
from famine, plague, earthquake, hurricane tornado and flood.”
(From St. Basil’s Liturgy)
With hurricane season upon the Southern United States, we have seen an outpouring of love, compassion, and concern towards those affected most recently by Hurricane Harvey. In the years since Hurricane Katrina, we of the Metropolis of Atlanta have become accustomed to the power of these threatening weather patterns, and we have become more alert. Now, I prayerfully ask that we turn our attention to our own Metropolis, whose communities are in the path of the oncoming Hurricane Irma, which is presently threatening the state of Flordia and coastal areas of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
As governors have declared states of emergency in several states and given the unpredictability of the storm, I strongly encourage you to continue to pay careful attention to government announcements and the news in the coming days, especially as government officials urge evacuation in some areas. For matters pertaining to our parishes, your clergy and Parish Councils have been directed to use their judgement as far as church closures are concerned for those communities that will be impacted. I also encourage each of you to look out for your friends and neighbors in the area, as examples of Christian love and kindness.
Earlier this week, we shared the following supply checklist, provided by Fr. Aristotle Damaskos, Proistamenos of Holy Trinity Church in Charleston, SC, with the clergy; and today, we share it with all of you, the faithful. On our website,we also have a list of preparedness tips and a list of updates from our communities as we receive them in our offices.
May God grant the strength and vigilance to ensure that we withstand the effects of the approaching storm. I humbly ask that all of us continue to offer up our prayers and supplications to our Almighty Creator for the homes, livelihoods and places of worship which will be impacted by the Hurricane. I remain,
Paternally yours with love in our Lord,
+ A L E X I O S

It is in this spirit that your Metropolis invites ALL laity and clergy from EVERY parish (regardless if you are a delegate or not) to join with us to explore exciting and positive best practices to help us on our journey as Christians and to make disciples of ourselves, our families, and our communities.
Why should I come?
We are excited to announce the following topics for the first official Faith Forums:

Family Life Ministry
The Metropolis of Atlanta’s Family Life Ministry (www.familylifeministry.atlanta.goarch.org) strengthens individuals, families and church families through adaptable programs, blogs and educational materials as a means of fostering connection within our homes and our parishes.
It’s a common scenario, we’ve all seen it and many of us are trying to manage it – a whole family at dinner, and everyone is on a device. Join us today as we discuss how to balance the risks and benefits of screen time, while fostering a close, Christ-centered family environment at the same time. Listening to our children creates an environment of support where our children feel that we are listening and taking them seriously and they listen too. So let’s put the electronics down and limit usage at home during family time.
Journey of Marriage (Pre-Marital Seminar)
All couples marrying in the Metropolis must attend a Metropolis-sponsored Journey of Marriage seminar prior to their wedding. The couple will present their certificate of completion to their parish priest after the seminar.
To see the full list of seminars through 2017, some scheduled already for 2018, and to register, please visit: http://www.familylifeministry.atlanta.goarch.org/upcoming-events-2/
