Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Tone

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Exaltation in the 2nd Tone

The life-giving Cross of Your goodness, which we the unworthy have from You as a gift, we present to You, O Lord, as an intercessor. Save our leaders and our nation and keep them in peace, through the Theotokos, O only One who loves humanity.

Apolytikion for Temple of the Resurrection in the 4th Tone

You have made the earthly beauty of the holy tabernacle of Your glory to be like the majesty of the firmament on high, O Lord. Make it strong forever and ever, and accept our supplications that we unceasingly bring to You there at the intercession of the Theotokos. For You are the life and resurrection of all.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Tone

Lord, Your Church appears to us * to be like heaven * full of light, and guides with light * all who believe in You, O Christ. * And we who stand in it cry to You: * Savior, establish forever this holy house.

Cornelius the Centurion & Martyr

Saint Cornelius was a Roman by race, a pagan by religion, a centurion in rank, an inhabitant of Caesarea of Palestine, a man pious and God-fearing who gave many alms to the people and prayed continually unto God. In accordance with an angelic vision granted to him, he sent to Joppa that they might bring the Apostle Peter. Saint Peter catechized him in the Faith of Christ and baptized all his household (Acts, ch.10). This became the beginning and the first fruits of the calling of the nations. It is said that, after this, he became a bishop, as some say, of Caesarea; but others say of Scepsis, which is not far from Troas; and that he died as a martyr.

The Consecration of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre)

The church that is honoured far above all others is that of the Holy Resurrection, which Saint Constantine the Great constructed at the place of Golgotha, where our Saviour was crucified and buried. For a long time this place had been purposely buried beneath the earth by the Jews and heathen; furthermore, during the reign of Hadrian (117-138), a temple dedicated to Aphrodite was built over the site so that this sacred place might be even further desecrated and fall into utter oblivion. It was here that the Cross was hidden. However, at the command of the pious Emperor Constantine, excavations were made and the tokens of the saving Passion were found. It was here, then, that the very great and magnificent temple named in honour of Christ God's Resurrection-the Anastasis-was built under the supervision of the blessed Helen, while Dracilian was Eparch of Palestine and Macarius was Archbishop of Jerusalem. It was the latter, also, who exalted the venerable Cross and performed the consecration of this temple in the year 336.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

Epistle Reading

The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18

BRETHREN, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Gospel Reading

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

PARISH NEWS

STEWARDSHIP

Our Stewardhisp committee has recently seen the loss of two key members.  Andy Lekos and Ernie Koutouzakis have both stepped down from this vital ministry reducing the committee by half!  Will you be able to help in their absence?  Most of you will answer NO!  Perhaps though there is someone out there reading this who will love this house enough to become involved.

Stewardship is not about raising money, but about gathering stewards.  The Lord Jesus states:  "Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!  And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.  For in this the saying is true: 'One sows and another reaps.'  I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored, and you have entered into their labors." John 4:35-38

Will any of you join in reaping what the Lord has sown?

+Fr. George

Sunday School

Hello Sunday School Families,

It's hard to believe its Sunday School time again.  All the children have returned to school and should be ready to jump back into Sunday School classes and activities.

We have many new and fun activities planned this year to include a Thanksgiving Food Drive, Cards for Prisoners, the St. Augustine Christmas Parade, Holy Trinity Christmas Pageant, Sunday School Luncheon, IOCC/SOUPer Bowl Sunday, Family Movie Night and Spaghetti dinner for OCMC, Resurrection Garden Project and a Good Friday Retreat.

As always, volunteers are needed to assist with projects and we are also in need of another teacher this year.  If you're interested in helping this year in any way, please contact Carman Gaetanos or Presbytera Renee Ritsi.

Attached is the Sunday School registration form and a snack calendar we would like to try out this year.  We are asking each family to sign up to bring snacks for all the Sunday School classes on two Sundays this upcoming school year.  If you will simply put your name by two dates, we will compose a master calendar and send it back out, as well as post it in church.

We're looking forward to a fun year with the children, and hope to share many new and educational things with them.

What is the age break down of the 2015/2016 classes?  We will have a preschool - kindergarten class, grades 1 - 5, a middle school and high school class.

When do classes meet?  Sunday School meets almost every Sunday of the school year except when there is a major Feast of the Church beginning September 13th immediately after Holy Communion.  The year ends on May 29th with Sunday School Graduation ceremony.

What type of special projects will the kids be doing this year?  This year we have a number of fun and meaningful events planned:  a Thanksgiving Food Drive, Cards for Prisoners, St. Augustine Christmas Parade, Holy Trinity Christmas Pageant, Sunday School Luncheon, IOCC/SOUPer Bowl Sunday, Family Movie Night and Spaghetti dinner for OCMC, Resurrection Garden Project and a Good Friday Retreat.

How can I help?  If you would like to volunteer this year as a Teacher or Teacher aide, or would like to assist with one of the great projects the kids will be doing this year, contact Carman Gaetanos or Presbytera Renee Ritsi.  Sunday School registration forms and snack sign-up sheet are available in the Narthex or from Carman or Presbytera Renee.

Notice

Starting on Sunday, October 4, 2015, for a period of 90 days, the weekly collection tray will no longer be passed during services.  We ask instead that you deposit any annual stewardship forms and payments in the box in the Narthex labeled for stewardship annual commitments and payments toward those commitment.

This is for the purpose of eliminating this distraction during the service.  We also ask that you consider making any weekly donations beyond your stewardship in the basket that will be placed by the doors exiting into the social hall each Sunday as you leave.  The monthly tray for mortgage reduction will still occur after services the third Sunday of each month, as well as any other special trays that might normally occur periodically throughout the year.  We will assess the impact to our church’s income after 90 days and determine whether to make this change permanent or revert back to a weekly Sunday tray.  Thank you for your patience during this test period.
