Apolytikion for Pentecost in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God, Who hast shown forth the fishermen as supremely wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them didst draw the world into Thy net. O Befriender of man, glory be to Thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Once, when He descended and confounded the tongues, the Most High divided the nations; and when He divided the tongues of fire, He called all men into unity; and with one accord we glorify the All-holy Spirit.

Matins Gospel Reading

Holy Pentecost
The Reading is from John 20:19-23

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were gathered, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Holy Pentecost

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 18.4,1.
Their voice has gone out into all the earth.
Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11.

WHEN THE DAY of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God."

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

Holy Pentecost
The Reading is from John 7:37-52; 8:12

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Holy Pentecost

Parish Council Update

Dear Fellow Parishioners and Friends of Saint Spyridon Church,

The Parish Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Father Nicolas Kazarian as our full time priest beginning June 1st, 2017.

Rev. Dr. Protopresbyter Nicolas Kazarian was born in France in 1982. His father is a Greek Orthodox priest in the south of France and his mother is a physician. Immediately after finishing high school in Nice, he started his undergraduate degree in Orthodox Theology at the Institute de Theology Orthodox Saint Serge in Paris, graduating with a BA in 2004. In 2005 he spent almost a year studying Greek at the University of Cyprus, in Nicosia, before moving to Switzerland to start an MA in Orthodox Theology at the Orthodox Theological Institute of Chambésy. After finishing his MA, he changed courses and started a PhD in geopolitics at the Sorbonne. He received a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation to spend a year in Athens, where he improved his knowledge of the Greek language and strengthened his love for Greek culture.  He successfully defended his dissertation, entitled “Cyprus, Geopolitics and Minorities”, in November 2011.

He was the assistant of H.E. Metropolitan Emmanuel of France from 2010 through June 2015. In the spring of 2014, Metropolitan Emmanuel asked him to be ordained as a priest, and he was ordained in June of the same year and served at Saint Etienne cathedral in Paris. Through H.E. Metropolitan Emmanuel’s leadership, he also had the opportunity to work for the Ecumenical Patriarchate, especially most recently during the Holy and Great Council in June 2016 (Crete, Greece) as a subject expert in the Press Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Fr. Nicolas has been teaching Theology at Saint-Serge since 2007, initially as an Instructor in Patristics and later as a lecturer in Western Church History and Ecumenical Relations. He has also taught Ecumenical Relations at the Catholic University of Paris. He is the author of numerous articles about the Orthodox Church in various languages. He sees dialogue – especially ecumenical and interreligious – as a way to reach out to society in general and to youth in particular.

After moving to Philadelphia in 2015, he assisted the Metropolis of New Jersey as a substitute priest serving different communities of the Greater Philadelphia region. He is very grateful to H.E. Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey for allowing him to serve in so many different parishes (especially in St. George, Philadelphia, PA; St. Thomas, Cherry Hill, NJ, St. Demetrios, Wildwood, NJ; Evangelismos, Jersey City, NJ), almost every Sunday, and for the chance to be part of his pastoral ministry.

He is married to Presbytera Lianna, who he met during the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s World Youth Conference in Istanbul in July 2007. She works as a translator. They married in October 2010 and have two children, Matthias (4) and Emilie (2). Fr. Nicolas is fluent in English, Greek and French and speaks some Russian and Italian.

Please join us in welcoming Father and his family to our Saint Spyridon Community.

Father Nicolas message

Dear Parishioners,

It is a tremendous honor and joy for my family and me to join the historic Church of St. Spyridon, in Washington Heights. As the home parish of so many Greek Americans throughout the country, your Church has been and still is the beating heart of a larger community sharing not only a rich legacy based on the encounter of the Christian faith and Hellenism, but also an inspiring destiny in this country.

Presbytera Lianna, our children Matthias and Emilie and I moved from France to Philadelphia two years ago. During this time, I had the joy, thanks to the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, of serving as a substitute priest in various parishes of the Metropolis. I am very grateful for His Eminence’s trust that allowed me to meet dedicated priests and committed parishioners, and get to know the reality of the Greek Orthodox Church in America. That experience taught me a crucial lesson echoing what Saint Paul wrote: “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: […] he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Rom 12:6-8) I have served with gladness the communities where I was sent, just as I now rejoice at becoming a part of the St. Spyridon family.

I am particularly humbled by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios’s trust in assigning me to your community. I am aware of the wounds and difficulties that your congregation has experienced, and I am deeply sorry that you have gone through such great pain. However, the corner stone of our faith is that after we fall, we should rise and stand up again, as led Christ rose from the dead. Your community has shown the resilience, the courage and the generosity needed to start a new chapter of its spiritual journey in this country. As a priest, I wholeheartedly hope that I can join you on this crucial journey, founding my pastoral work on two essential values: to care and to inspire.

I look forward to meeting each one of you and to praying with you in your beautiful Church.
